IAEDP™ FOUNDATION PHOENIX CHAPTER QUARTERLY EVENT

IAEDP™ FOUNDATION PHOENIX CHAPTER
QUARTERLY EVENT AND FALL HOLIDAY CELEBRATION

Presentation: "The Healing Brain" by Dr. Ralph Carson

Dr. Carson will explain the symptomology and behaviors of an eating disorder using a neuroscientific model to point out particular circuits, nuclei and neurotransmitters involved in the disease process. The "Healing Brain" helps put treatment into perspective by making it possible to visualize anorexia and bulimia as an imbalance of interconnecting circuits that trigger distorted thinking and feelings around food issues and body image. This concrete neuroscientific explanation enhances long term recovery by incorporating support for why more than weight gain, refeeding and abstinence from behaviors are necessary to prevent future relapse.

This event will outline the neuroscience of eating disorder behavior and provide a viable explanation as to how psychotherapy contributes to recovery. Participants will gain knowledge in understanding the transition from denial, resistance, exploration and commitment; and employ a practical technique of establishing and maintaining trust with the eating disorder patient.

Dr. Carson has been involved in the clinical treatment of obesity, addictions and eating disorders for over 30 years and is currently the clinical nutrition and exercise consultant for Remuda Ranch.
