The “biopsychiatric” theory and research genetics, temperament, and neurochemistry is considered by many in the field—to be the “cutting edge” of research into the causes, treatment, and prevention of eating disorders. The goal is to explore practical conclusions about what that paradigm does and does not mean for an approach to treatment, prevention, education, and advocacy that emphasizes the integration of biological factors with powerful psychological and socio-cultural factors. EDP628 Eating Disorders Across the Lifespan -  An Alarming Trend

EDP628: 
There have been marked advances in knowledge and understanding of the eating disorder over time. Also the spectrum of what is called `eating disorders' has gradually expanded into obesity as new conditions such as binge eating disorder have been introduced into the diagnostic system. The dialectical process of synthesis between the body of knowledge from the obese and the lean end of the spectrum can enrich our understanding. Exploring a Lifespan of eating disorders, we see a trend which should alarm all of us ... from parents to politicians.

The incidence of eating disorders is increasing in younger age groups. The impact of these disorders has serious chronic medical complications, and is of major public health concern. Due to the emergence of symptoms in childhood and through adolescence, research questions that address early preventive and interceptive strategies are explored.
